Postural Restoration Institute – Impingement and Instability
Impingement and instability syndromes are among the most common—and at the same time most complex—challenges in training, therapy, and rehabilitation. They affect movement patterns in multiple ways, can limit athletic performance, and place a significant burden on patients in everyday life.
Yet too often, only the symptom is treated—while the underlying interaction of systems that drives the problem remains unaddressed.
This is precisely where the two-day PRI seminar “Impingement and Instability” begins. Led by Dan Houglum, an internationally recognised specialist in Postural Restoration, the course offers an in-depth yet highly practical look at the mechanisms of compression (impingement) and malalignment (instability). You will learn how to integrate seemingly separate structures into a functional context—and, in doing so, discover new solutions for your patients and clients.
This seminar is designed for therapists, trainers, and medical professionals who want to deepen their knowledge, build greater clinical confidence, and expand their repertoire of highly effective interventions.
Content & Learning Outcomes
This seminar provides a deep understanding of the underlying mechanisms of impingement and instability, showing how they interrelate. You will learn to identify complex patterns and intervene effectively in practice.
Key Topics:
Integration of compression and instability
- How calcaneal impingement interacts with femoral instability
- The relationship between pelvic impingement and scapular instability
- The influence of thoracic malalignments on movement economy and stability
Functional movement and control
- Frontal plane oscillation and its significance for ground control and overhead activity
- Scapular function as a key factor in reducing femoro-tibial instability
- Linking thoracic, talo-calcaneal, and pelvic compression with global movement patterns
Practical application
- Developing treatment plans that reduce impingement and promote stability
- Identifying relevant references that influence gait patterns
- Analysing and correcting supination and pronation patterns that compromise decompression and frontal plane control
Your Takeaway
- Professional: Advanced insights into the functional interplay of impingement and instability
- Practical: Concrete tools and techniques you can apply directly in training and therapy
- Personal: Greater confidence in clinical decision-making, clearer understanding of complex complaints, and more impact in your daily work
The seminar combines lecture, demonstration, clinical application, and interactive Q&A sessions—creating a learning environment that seamlessly connects theory and practice.
